Youth Groups
B'nai B'rith
Youth
There are three
active B'nai B'rith chapters in New Orleans: two for girls and one for
boys. The activities are coordinated by a B'nai B'rith Youth Council
and staffed by the youth worker of the Jewish Community Center.
Synagogue Youth
Groups
Reform
All reform congregations participate in SOFTY or Southern Federation
of Temple Youth. SOFTY also operates the Henry Jacobs Camp in Utica,
Miss., which has a full summer program and is used for retreats.
Orthodox
Beth Israel youngsters participate in the National Conference of
Synagogue Youth.
Conservative
Shir Chadash's youth programs are affiliated with United Synagogues of
America. Programs include Kadimah for 6th and 7th graders, and USY for
high school students.
Young Judaea
Open to all 4th
through 12th graders, Young Judaea is a city-wide movement whose
purpose is to provide youth with a positive Jewish experience and
close identity with Israel while having fun. There are more than 80
members in New Orleans. Clubs meet on Sunday afternoons, and members
also host groups from other areas.
