Lower Garden District
The Lower
Garden District is bound by Jackson Avenue, Pontchartrain Expressway,
the Mississippi River and St. Charles Avenue. The close proximity
to the CBD and French Quarter, along with the abundant New Orleans
"flavor" of the area, have resulted in a continual rise
of property values.
A small area, above Felicity Street, was part of the City of Lafayette,
which formed the center of what is known as the Garden District.
The major portion, below Felicity, was an extension of the City's
first suburb, Faubourg Saint Mary. The Lower Garden district consisted
of a series of faubourgs laid out in 1806 and 1807. New construction
dates back to the 1830s, and included rental units. Many of the
grandiose mansions in the area date back to the 1840s.
Coliseum Square, an urban park in the center of the Lower Garden
District, is made up of large oak trees. Most of the residences
that face the Square display architecture styles of the 19th Century.
Garden and tree-lined streets provide a picturesque panorama.
Public transportation includes easy access to buses on Magazine,
Jackson, etc., as well as streetcars on St. Charles Avenue, the
Pontchartrain Expressway, the Crescent City Connection and the
Jackson/Gretna ferry.
Community events include home tours hosted by the Coliseum Square
Association, as well as other activities. |
