The Faubourg Marigny District is bounded by Esplanade
Avenue, St. Claude Avenue, Press Street and the Mississippi River
and is probably the best preserved 19th Century neighborhood in
the city.
Creole cottages make up a large part of the district and are identified
by their one-and-a-half-story
height. The upper half story is set under the gable-ended roof
that slopes toward the front of the house. The cottages are often
built flush with the property line, along the sidewalk. Another
dominant type of house in the district is the shotgun cottage,
some of which date back to the 1840s.
Community events include: Christmas caroling in Washington Square
and the Krewe du Vieux Parade.
Public transportation includes direct bus service to both UNO
and SUNO Universities, as well as multiple bus routes to the French
Quarter and CBD.
