| Mid-City What is known as the Mid-City area is bound by Orleans Avenue, Tulane Avenue, City Park Avenue and Claiborne Avenue. The intersection of Esplanade Avenue and Bayou St. John is one of the higher elevations in the city. This area is made up of turn-of-the-century homes, as well as modern architecture. Along with its lovely New Orleans architecture, the area offers a beautiful and well-maintained urban park, City Park. The park is the largest in the city, as well as one of the safest. The first section of the park was acquired by the city in 1854 and the first improvements were made in the 1890s. The weaving of the many lagoons, magnolias and live oaks throughout the park, along with the three 18-hole golf courses, add to the park's beauty. Other activities offered at the park are tennis, boating, fishing, bicycling, concerts, horseback riding and picnicking. The amusement park is also the home of a stupendous working carousel that dates back to 1904. Commercial development has already placed over 20 restaurants in the area, with more on the way. A Sav-A-Center is planned for the near future and The American Can Company project is underway. Public transportation includes bus service with the Canal Street, Esplanade, Orleans and Carrollton lines. The streetcar is proposed and, upon completion, will run from Canal to Beauregard Circle. Community events include the Mid-City Festival of Lights; a fundraiser known as "A Chocolate Affair"; and The Endimyon Parade. |
